Which is better: Keyboard or Piano?
Pianos are fabulous but you can’t turn the volume down, generally. You can play keyboards using head phones which the neighbours will appreciate. Ideally have both!
If you are buying a piano it is preferable to buy an overstrung piano not a straight strung piano. How to tell the difference: Lift the top lid of the piano and you should see the tuning pins at the top of the piano. If the tuning pins are evenly spaced along the pin block and the strings are all parallel and vertical this is a straight strung piano. If there is a group of tuning pins at the left and a separate group at the right and the strings cross over in an X shape this is an overstrung piano.
Get a piano tuner to check over a second hand piano before buying: sometimes pianos are quite worn in ways that only a trained eye will see.
What Keyboard should you choose?
If you want a keyboard that sounds and feels like a piano then get one with weighted keys, and listen carefully to the piano sound. Don’t be distracted by all the other sound buttons, at least not yet.
If you require portability then you will need a keyboard but still look for weighted keys. And be sure to get one with at least sixty-one (61) keys or you will be wishing you had sooner or later.
Also make sure that you get a sustain pedal because a keyboard sounds really dead without one. The sound stops as soon as you lift your finger off the key when really you want the option of the note lingering for a moment or two. The difference is quite noticeable.
